SYNOPSIS

Life seems to be on its way to perfection when Lily runs into Kyleโ€”and with fate constantly throwing them across each othersโ€™ paths, it seems like an epic romance fairytale ending. However, when questionable elements of their relationship start surfacing, Lily is forced to look back upon the darkness of her childhood & confront both the monster in the past & present. Does she have the strength to protect herself & those she loves, or the courage to make her own decision?

REVIEW

There are too many things worth discussing about this amazing book. Though I did find some of the romance scenes & dialogues awkwardly forcedโ€”which kind of prevented me from a deeper connection with the plot & charactersโ€”as it technically still is a slightly cliche girl-meets-boy romance, it also centers on the topic of domestic abuse, with such an excruciating clarity that it will leave you SHOOK.

Told from the the perspective of the victim, I was thus able to understand more the reasons to some questionable choices Lily may have made. But while rolling my eyes at how infuriating she could be at times, I also found myself pondering whether Iโ€™d have made the same decisions if presented with similar choices. And isnโ€™t that THE question? One may think itโ€™s simpleโ€”isnโ€™t leaving the abuser such a straightforward solution? But WHAT IF ITโ€™S ME and WHY should we blame the VICTIM for refusing to leave, for believing & forgiving, AND for being stuck in the endless cycle of abuse.

This is the kind of heart-wrenching story that will quietly shatter you. Words cannot truly express how much the story has urged me to think & reflect upon the topic & lack of true understanding. It breaks my heart reading the last sentence & seeing how much courage it took for Lily to make her own decision.
